Comments Due on Permit for Utah City's Membrane Bioreactor - Oct. 14, 2013

The Utah Department of Environmental Quality proposes to issue a Utah Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (UPDES) permit for the facility, which will replace an existing lagoon system. - Oct. 14, 2013

Comments are due Oct. 14 on the Utah Division of Water Quality's proposal to issue a Utah Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (UPDES) permit for a new membrane bioreactor in the city of Santaquin. It would be the first UPDES permit for the city, which is building the bioreactor plant to replace an existing lagoon system with a capacity of 178 million gallons.

Reclaimed water from the new plant will meet Type 1 reuse standards and will be used in the city's existing pressurized irrigation system during the irrigation season and stored in the existing storage ponds during the winter. Off spec water that does not meet Type 1 reuse standards will be discharged to an existing pond with a capacity of 1.6 million gallons and recirculated through the treatment system. The Santaquin Water Reclamation Facility will treat all of the municipal wastewater in Santaquin City, according to DEQ.

Written comments can be submitted by email to Kim Shelley of the UPDES Engineering Section at kshelley@utah.gov. Visit this site for more information about the project.
