This leading UK and US food retailer, which employs nearly 173,000 people, also has interests in financial services and property.
In the UK, the group comprises Sainsbury's Supermarkets (which constitute over 80% of the group) and Sainsbury's Bank. In addition to quality food and grocery products, many Sainsbury's supermarkets offer bread baked on the premises, delicatessen, meat and fish counters, pharmacies, coffee shops, restaurants and petrol stations.
All their own-brand products are manufactured without GMOs and their fish products respect the FAO's code of conduct for responsable fisheries. Moreover, they were able to reduce their vehicle journeys by the equivalent of 17.6 million km in the past 3 years (-10%) by increasing their supply chain efficiency.
As to Sainsbury's Bank, it concentrates on reducing paper usage and on minimising its waste. The compagny also tries to influence its suppliers and its customers into adopting environmentally friendly attitudes.
