EMAS: D-143-000021
NACE: 92.53, 55.
One of the main tourists attractions of Lake Constance, Mainau Island is owned by the Swedish Lord Bernadotte and has been run by the Lennart-Bernadotte foundation since the 1970s.
Environmentally conscious since the late fifties, Mainau Island have had an environmental policy since 1998. Mainau Island is the first botanic garden in Europe to receive an ecoaudit certificate, and it is EMAS-registered.
Its main environmental impact reductions are in energy. CO2 emissions have been reduced by half, thanks to a biogas system that processes organic waste from gardens and restaurants.
Mainau Island also try to apply environmentally friendly gardening methods (less pesticides and fertilizers, watering with rainwater and water from the lake, etc.) and to reduce waste production (less one-use products, less packaging, souvenirs now only wrapped in paper/textile/compostable materials). Moreover, they intensively untertake activities to sensitize visitors and suppliers.
