Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe

Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe, Germany

Activity: Tourist ship transport

EMAS: D-143-000035
NACE: 61.2, 63.2

The 'Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe', the Lake Constance cruise ship company, operates in an ecologically sensitive region.

As well as providing drinking water for 4.5 million people, Lake Constance is home to numerous water birds, animals and plant life. The area is also a major recreational space and holiday destination, and the company’s 16 ships transport around 3 million passengers per season, which represents, in total, 350.000 km per year.

The company introduced EMAS on its sites and on its vessels and the first validation came in 2001, becoming the first inland water shipping company in Europe with an EMAS registration.

The environmental objectives listed in its Environmental Statement cover all the environmental aspects of the company: installation of a separate waste collection system on vessels and administrative sites, 40% increase of use of recycled paper for promotional material, decrease in paint and detergents used on board ships, etc. Moreover, with 150 staff and around 30 seasonal workers, internal and external communication is an important tool to motivate employees and raise awareness among customers.
