KLM, The Netherlands
Activity: Air transport
EMAS: NL-000037
NACE : 62.0, 62.1, 63.23
The Dutch airline KLM's environmental management system has been approved both by ISO 14001 and by EMAS.
This EMS has lead to a dramatical improvement of the sound, emissions and fuel consumption of its airplanes, the reduction of energy consumption buildings and the introduction of a heat pump as a new energy saving technique within the company. As to waste, it has an active sorting and prevention policy and it encourages suppliers to use recyclable packaging. Furthermore, KLM and Boeing have been working together for a long time to improve the paints used to protect metal from corrosion. KLM has also focused on the smooth operation of the mobility chain, trying to optimize the choice of aircraft type and use of other transport modes depending on the number of passengers, the volume of freight and the distance concerned. In this context, KLM is involved, together with 25 other parties, in the European COACT (Combined Air Rail Cargo Transport) project to study the long-term carriage of freight by train in Europe.
