Austrian Railways (ÖBB), Austria

Activity: Public transport

EMAS: A-000299
NACE: 60.1, 63.1, 63.2

Austrian Railways (ÖBB) chose the Vienna West train station to resume the validation project of the late 1990s.

The EMAS process started with an environmental review, within the ÖkoBusinessPlan, funded by the City of Vienna. This plan aims at providing step-by-step access to environmental management, including EMAS.

Every day 70,000 travelers and 220 trains profit from the Austrian Railways’ commitment to EMAS. Several measures are taken and focused on the renovated station: New waste separation bins are implemented, separating glass and paper from the material flow. Improvement of separation is the first step to a separation plan and common waste disposal all over Austrian Railways' fleet and sites. Further measures include implementation of a filter package to reach lower limits in oil separators, a construction recycling project and a green book for nature conservation beside the railway tracks.
