EMASPOLI - Livorno Port Authority, Italy
Activity: Port authority
The port of Livorno serves as focus of EMAS activities in its region.
Livorno Port Authority has developed traffic with all the major ports in the world. Every year approximately 5,000 ships and 21 million tons of goods pass through there, in 24 terminals. About 6,000 people work directly in the port, which represents 7.8% of the Local Economys GDP. Apart from containerized traffic the port also deals with bulk liquids and solids, motor vehicles, cellulose pulp and timber, general cargo, minerals and iron manufacturing products, cereals, fruit and frozen products.
The Livorno Port Authority has implemented a project to improve and reduce environmental impacts of economic activities, called EMASPOLI (for EMAS Port of Livorno), which can be defined as an EMS to be shared among all the companies working in the port of Livorno.
Livorno Port Authority proposes itself as the EMAS reference point for the local port community. The aim is to raise the level of environmental awareness in the port sector by disseminating the contents of the project and providing the opportunity for environmental certification.
This has been successful, as many port companies started the procedures to obtain ISO 14001 certification. One of the reasons of this success is that they are faced with the problem of safeguarding the environment in the Cinque Terre National Park, which is only 20 km away. The EMAS upgrade to Livorno's management system was to be validated in January 2004.
