Wallonne Region
Financial support in the Walloon Region is not specifically dedicated to EMAS. There are three major support programmes:
- Assistance for investments (de minemis)
For enterprises with an certified EMS (ISO 14001 or EMAS) the maximum rate of intervention is 20% instead of 15% for others
- Support for workers formation (de minemis)
The formation of workers in Quality, Safety or Environmental matters is supported by the Walloon Region. The enterprise can get back up to 30% of the worker's salary (50% of the trainer's costs). De minemis aid is limited to €100,000 for a single enterprise within three years.
- Support for consultants
Enterprises with less than 100 workers can get back 75% of the consultant's fees. This aid is limited to €12,500.
Other programmes created on an initiative of the Walloon Minister for the Environment, managed by the Walloon Business Association but financed by the Walloon Region, the Cellule du Fil de l'éco-gestion:
- promotes the EMS standards ISO14001 and EMAS (15 sub-regional seances of sensitising in 2003, 10 are planed for 2004)
- facilitates the access to accurate information about those standards
- co-ordinates in 2004 a technical assistance program with the aim to register one or two pilot SMEs by the end of the year.

'Presti' initiative
In December 2002, the Government of Flanders approved for the fifth time a Preventive Stimulative Programme (Presti 5). It encourages business to take effective steps towards integrating environmental care and preventive policies into management.
The objectives are clear and are twofold:
- prevention by avoiding and limiting the creation of waste and emission such as packing waste, spillage, and energy losses.
- environmental care by inventorying environmental trouble spots in the operation, and working out specific measures to control, limit and prevent these.
Underlying the program is an exhaustive funding mechanism. Projects dealing with the following topics may be subsidied:
- environmental prevention experiences exchange
- environmental prevention systems demonstration
- environmental awareness raising
- introduction of new environmental friendly techniques
- environmental impact measurements systems
- environmental prevention measures expenses control system
OVAM selects projects after a two-month call period. Maximum 65% of project expenses are subsidized.
