Transport is a substantial factor regarding the environmental impact of the Oulu Mill.
In 2002, 1.7 million cubic metres of wood and 240,000 tonnes of peat were transported to the Oulu Mill.
This corresponds to approximately 100 timber trucks and 18 peat trucks a day. 60 percent of other raw materials were transported by sea and the rest by land.
Pulp was both imported to and exported from the mill. Over 60 percent of the pulp was transported by ship and the rest by trucks.
Paper was transported to customers mainly by ship. In 2002, 560,000 tonnes of the Oulu Mill's paper was shipped from the Oulu harbour, and approximately 91,000 tonnes from other harbours.
Paper was delivered to domestic and Russian customers mainly by road and rail.
Efficient transportation requires the best possible volumetric efficiency. The Oulu Mill and the Veitsiluoto Mill use shared shipping, which results in very high volumetric efficiency. The mills tend to hire transportation ships that use low-sulphurous fuel.
